Phase II: Counter Rotation/ Flexion Phase Days 3 to 20
(Repair Phase)
Therapeutic Objectives
- Continue to avoid exacerbation of symptoms
- Transition into controlled movements to positively affect healing
- Protect spinal segment at the same time as providing enough tension in the line of collagen fibers in order to stimulate fibroblastic repair of the collagen matrix
- Begin rotational and flexion exercises in a controlled manner

Evaluation Procedures
- Evaluate any changes in the patients symptoms
- If there is an increase in symptoms from the current exercises, moving into the next phase to more challenging exercises may be contraindicated
Criteria and methods used for functional progression and return to activity
- Better control of movements
- Flexion and rotational exercises remain steady and controlled
- Symptoms have improved
- Pain reduction
Protective or Prophylactic Measures for Progression into the next Phase
- Athlete can continue to wear back brace during the day for comfort if needed
